Dick Muri believes government works best at the local level.

Over the last few decades, the federal government has grown to dominate areas that the Constitution and commonsense left in the hands of state and local government; education and healthcare most notably.

The needs of Tacoma are different from the needs of Tampa. Overarching federal programs become nothing more than an ineffective burden on taxpayers because they fail to recognize these differences. More and more of our state and local budgets are controlled by mandates from congress.

Dick Muri, a former school board member, has seen the harm that invasive federal regulations have done to our schools and teachers. Education is a dynamic force, which can best be improved at the local level. We must do more to protect our education system by empowering individual districts, principals and teachers.

Most Americans are now deeply skeptical that “Obamacare” will improve their lives. An unconstitutional mandate is not the answer. Forcing Americans to contribute to the bottom line of massive insurance companies while vastly expanding the power of government is a dangerous precedent that should concern progressives and conservatives.

Dick Muri wants a restoration of federalism. Ending federal funding for education, healthcare and other programs would be disastrous, but we can reduce the mandates that accompany this money. Dick Muri will trust states, local governments and the people to make decisions for themselves.

A Balanced Budget: Congress has Made the Choice to Fail

Many voters may not have noticed, but the massive budget cuts that have hit Washington State, King County and Tacoma were avoided in Pierce County. This is because of leaders like Dick Muri. Before the economic crisis of 2008 the Pierce County Council adopted a bi-partisan budget that successfully cut waste from the county government and built up a substantial rainy day fund. This allowed Pierce County to avoid deep cuts to services and major tax increases.

We have not seen the same commonsense in congress. Rather than working together to balance the federal budget, congress has bankrupted future generations, all the while voting against a balanced budget amendment. Their neglect is willful, their failures a choice.

As your congressman, Dick Muri will choose to work with both parties to balance the budget. It will require courage to make tough decisions. Popular entitlement programs must be reformed. Waste in the Defense budget must be cut. The tax code must be re-written to be fairer, flatter and less prone to the political abuses that allow massive corporations, like GE, to avoid paying taxes – effectively shifting taxes to small businesses and the middle class.

As a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel and Combat Veteran, Dick Muri will preserve America’s military strength and oppose carelessly committing the U.S. to war. He’s seen firsthand the impact that long deployments overseas have on our fighting men and women and their families.

Muri favors a timely withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Muri opposes major cuts to national defense, but will work to cut wasteful spending from the defense budget. He opposes Congress’ thoughtless plan to waste tax payer money on a second engine for the F-35 and will apply this same commonsense to future defense procurement decisions.

There are brave men and women that fight daily to preserve the freedoms that we, in America, enjoy. For that, they deserve the honor and respect they are due. We must ensure they have access to proper benefits for themselves and their families, never worrying if they are protected. Our veterans deserve nothing less.

Dick Muri believes that people create jobs, not big government.

As a Pierce County Councilman Muri has worked with both Democrats and Republicans to pass many ordinances and resolutions to create jobs in Pierce County. Together these changes allowed the county to create hundreds of jobs and build roads when costs were at near record lows – a triumph for job creation and sound budgeting. All this was achieved without raising taxes.

As our next congressman, Dick will again reach across the aisle to work with Democrats and his fellow Republicans to repair and expand America’s failing infrastructure system, creating jobs today and improving the economy for the future.

During the worst recession of our lives the Obama administration has adopted nearly 30,000 pages of job killing rules and regulations; most with few, if any, benefits to worker safety or the environment. Dick will join with pro-job Democrats to require all federal rules meet a basic cost-benefit-analysis to ensure that we’re protecting workers and the environment without destroying family wage jobs.

Muri supports new rules to ensure that no bank becomes “too big to fail” and he has pledged to reject all campaign contributions from Wall Street.
